Karen Britton

My journey has been difficult and unique, gaining inspiration and strength along the way,  just to end up exactly where I'm supposed to be; at peace, inspired and with a paint brush in hand.

First things first, thank you for visiting my site!  These pieces are a random smattering of work I've done over the past two decades.  Most are murals and/or commissioned art, I lost photos of some of my best work along the way, but I'm glad that the universe brought me right back around to this beautiful city which has inspired me to pick up the brush again.

Back in the stone ages while I was in high school I drew a lot, took a disproportionate number of art classes, entered local art competitions, but swore that I would never make art, which is my love and passion, a career making it something I would hate.  As usual, I was wrong..  In 2001, after I had my first daughter, I was fortunate enough to be introduced to the owner of an all female mural/art business.   She was kind enough to take me on, show me the ropes and then set me free.  I stayed with the company for a few years and the experience was invaluable.  In that time I painted murals, created my first mosaic, learned amazing faux finishes,  made art out of furniture and even traveled to Nashville, TN for a trade show to learn from some of the best muralist in the country.  In 2004 my family and I decided to move to Hilton Head, SC and other than the "Hang 10" mural and the two large portraits of my girls, I all but abandoned my art for about 15 years.

When I moved back to Annapolis in 2013 I did actually complete the painting of my sister, started two paintings (which I didn't finish, surprise) and still carried with my unfinished paintings from Hilton Head, but still suffered from a terrible case of painters block.

In 2016, Hurricane Mathew sidelined me here in Winston Salem and I was lucky enough to discover this incredibly artistic city!  I was blown away by the Art district and inspired to get back into my work.   It took me a couple of years but I actually finished 3 pieces that have been traveling with me since Hilton Head, 2 pieces from Annapolis and started an entire Winston Salem series as an homage to the city that brought me home.

I am available for commissioned pieces, portraits as well a murals.   If you have any questions about the pieces, please ask!
